I am an electrical engineer Can i get in an IIT with a gate score of 663 .... my rank is 420 .... also is it good enough for getting me a job in companies like IOCL etc

This year the minimum cut off in GATE score for selecting in IITs through GATE is 500 as you had got 63 you are eligible but the counselling has ended now and from 19th of this month (July 2010) semester is going to be start so for this time I think the entry is over.

For your second question IOCL here is the information you required

So I have a plan for you first try to get in to IOCL then work hard there (+ while working there prepare for CAT exam also either by self preparation or join any institute better to join TIME) and of course if you worked hard you will get promotions but in order to go for a better hierarchical degree in a big company profile (like IOCL)your degree qualification should also be more that is you should have Master degree certificate for that you had written GATE its good. But now work in IOCL for a minimum period of 2 to 3 years and then ask your department H.R. to sponsor you to study for M.tech degree in IIT. Then company will do it if you perform exceptionally well during your working period there (because if you done that then company will believe the words what you say and may have a chance to accept your request). If it doesn't happens then write CAT exam for which you had already prepared during your working period and hit it. So you have 2 ways to choose not to opt. I hope you understand . admission in iit is depend on your
percentile if your percentile is above85% you get admission in IIT
but if your percentile is below 85% than you have to move towards other collages.

u cannot get in IIT...and the deadline for applications is over in IIT... approach some other better colleges as early as possible..

Well, your GATE score is very Good.

If someone is scoring 640+ in and also having at least 95% in GATE then he/she is are eligible for Direct admission in IIT's.


I can guess if you have applied for respective IIT's checkout if they have listed you in Interview, however they should'nt do because you have scored above the cutoffs and are eligible for direct admission.


Dont worry you will surely get IIT's.

Even if you will get new IIT's dont hesitate in opting for same.

This is a good score but the admission is on percentile basis.
If you have above 98 percentile then you can get admission for M.tech in IIT.

Firstly congratulations ! To score good marks in GATE exams.

As per Faiyaz tells you, that you will get direct admission IIT's. So, dont worry you will get a seat in IIT. Because your marks in osem, But i think you have face interview, after Interview you will get admission in IIT.

But you got 663 marks, then you will get admission in IIT, So you dont worry.......

At this score you cannot get call for direct admission in the good IITs. However, you can get a chance to get admission through written test or interview.
Good IITs refer old IITs. For post graduation new IITs are useless because there is lack of good infrastructure, laboratories and also professors and classes.
So, as far as master degree is concerned you should go for old IITs or IISc.
Also, if you have job in IOCL and not getting a good college then go for the job in IOCL. Oil companies are very good in package.

I have 99.2 percentile and i applied to iit bombay delhi and madras i have secured above 80 % in BE too ..... still didnt get admission in any iit yet ...

@Sudepam- ur GATE score is awesome 643. Ur percentile is at itz best 99.2. Even ur B.E percent is gud too. Hw com u r nt selected? A matter to think. Enquire bout it. Jst dont depend on it. By d way u r from which colg?

Yes, you have got such a huge score in GATE examination, and I dont think so that you will not get any seat of electrical in IITs.
The other thing is of IOCL, then my friend they do consider this GATE score only in their interview, but before this you have to pass from a pre placement test. Each company conduct their tests before interview. Good GATE score would be beneficial for candidate in selection.\

this year you were eligible to take admission. but now it is not possible. because the counseling is finished many days ago. for this year cut off was 500 gate score.

but do not worry you have not taken admission. try for next year surely you will get chance to take admission again as the validity of GATE score is now two years.

yea this marks is very good to take job in IOCL. you may try for it. it will be also very good for you.

Is there interview necessary for getting admission for MTech in IIts?

Ofcourse you have very good chance of getting admission n iits and getting selection in iocl.
you can apply to all iits in various branches.
most probably they will call you.

yeah after you get good rank you need to apply to IITs , then they will shortlist and call you, you have to pay some minimun fee , and if again shorltlisted they will call you for the written test, and then if you qaulify finaaly interview is there, please prepare well , its not easy , but doable best of luck.

hii, as there are many candidates who secured more marks this time, so all seats will end up by 3000 genaral,

so you can get in anna university, also in

vtu best colleges with stipends and placements.

with this much rank and get score it will be little difficult to get into an iit.because the minimum cut off for iit's this year is 500 marks.but for getting into a job like iocl its a quite easy option.so just apply for the post you required in the respective company and give some group discussion which will be conducted by them.after group discussion there will be personal interviews which decide your fate to join the company.
