It is not mandatory to be a painter/drawing specialist to pursue Civil Engineering. Basically the drawing you are talking about are called diagrams. Its very easy because you will normaly need compas, protectors and scale to draw those diagram.

No need to take extra teaching classes to learn sketching and drawing especially for Civil Engineering.

You will learn it while pursuing your course. No need to panik for it. It is not at all a hurdle for pursuing the course.

Dear pal,
civil engineering is a vast field which includes building construction, transportation, water supplying. Soil mechanics, remote sensing etc. You do not need drawing skills for getting into all the fields.
If you do your career as a design engineer given plan for a building then you might need drawing otherwise you do not require it moreover computer version has come for all the drawing which is referred to as auto cadd with the knowledge of computer you can draw provided you know the concepts. Even if you drew by hand the drawing is simple only it includes drawing lines indicating the different levels in the building and also the different rooms in the building. For that you need not be a painter.
But do not worry even if you do not want to work with drawings there are many works available for civil engineers which include site work in the construction , work in the manufacturing industry like cement, bricks, etc.

Ive just completed high school and want to do civil engineering. This is my gap year so ive got plenty time. Ive always dreamt of becoming a proffesional civil engineer but im skeptic about it because i have a very limited knowledge on necessary advanced computer skills required such as AUTOCAD ,MATLAB, programming languages and all. But then i realise its foolish of me to think about these things so early. Ive got a gap year as mentioned earlier and i wish to learn all the computing skills that are required to become an excellent engineer. Please suggest me what softwares, programming languages ,etc should i be good at?
