You can appear for the National Eligibility Test on completion of Master of Science degree. However you will need to secure minimum of 55 percent marks in M.Sc. If you belong to the SC/ST community then you need 50 percent marks in post graduation.

This is the basic requirement to appear for National Eligibility Test. Same also goes for the State Eligibility Test. There is not much difference between the two. While NET is conducted by central government and would offer lectureship is central government funded colleges, SET is conducted on the state level where each state conducts its own exam for lectureship.

You will have the option to choose between any two exams. If you want lectureship in particular state then I would suggest that you take SET exam by that particular state. If there is no such requirement then you may appear for NET entrance exam. NET exam is conducted by the UGC and it take place twice a year. National Eligibility Test takes place in June and December of every year.

Eligibility

1. A post graduation degree from a UGC recognized university.

2. At least 55 percent marks in post graduation.

3. SC/ST need 50 percent marks.

4. Final year students of master degree course can also apply.

5. But they should be able to submit their degrees within 2 years of completing the NET exam, else will be disqualified.

6. You can only apply for NET exam in the subject in which you completed post graduation.

7. The age limit for JRF is 28 years.

8. The age limit is extended by 3 years for OBC.

9. SC/ST are eligible for 5 years relaxation.

10. There is no age limit for Lectureship.

11. There is no limit on number of attempts.

NET - NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST, conducted by UGC two times a year one in June and other in December for selection of Lectureship and award to Junior Research Fellowship.

Eligibility Criteria for NET:-

-The candidate must be an Indian National
-Should have completed Post Graduation in any stream with 55% marks(50% for SC/ST candidate) from a recognised University.
-There is no upper age limit for those applying for Lectureship but those applying for JRF should be within 28 years of age with upper age relaxation for reserved candidate.

Hence as you are pursing M.Sc. Physics, after completion of which with required eligibility criteria you can apply for NET or SET(State Eligibility Test) conducted in State level.
