Quote:
Direct current generator is an electrical machine which converts mechanical energy into direct current electricity. The principle of energy conversion is based upon production of dynamically induced emf. Construction: The DC generator consists of following parts: 1. Yoke: Outer frame of generator is called Yoke. It holds the magnetic pole cores of DC generator and carries the magnetic field flux. It is made up of cast iron or rolled steel. 2. Poles: It supports the field windings. Field winding is wound on poles in series or parallel. 3. Pole shoe: It is extended part of poles which spread out air gap flux uniformly. 4. Armature core: It is rotor of generator and armature core is cylindrical in shape with slots to carry armature windings. 5. Commutator and Brushes: Commutator collects current from generator and sends it to load as direct current. It converts the alternating current to direct current. Brushes are made up of carbon and only function is to collect current from the commutator. Principle of working of DC generator: It is based upon Faraday's Law of Electromagnetic Induction. According to it when a conductor moves in a magnetic field thereby cutting magnetic field lines, a dynamically induced emf is produced in conductor and if the circuit is closed, current starts flowing through the external resistance or closed path. |
