how to prepare for linguistics for NET exam.. is it necessary to go for coaching?

In my MA(English Literature), I have less than 50% marks. the question is how can I do Ph.D.? will i have to do MA again? Or is there any other way? If I do Ma again then What about NET? Should i also prepare for it? if I qualify net then what could be the benefit?
