sp hybridization is a type of intermixing of the atomic orbitals to form 2 new hybrid orbitals of sp type. sp orbitals are formed by intermixing of one s and one p orbital.

Simple formula for finding out no. of hybrid orbital in a molecule : (no.of valence electrons in central atom + no.of monovalent atoms around central atom + anionic charge - cationic charge) / 2.
if no.of hybrid orbitals = 2 - sp, 3 - sp2, 4-sp3, 5 - sp3d.
