Actually IAS Examination pattern is of three levels i.e.,

Level 1 - CSAT(Preliminary)
Level 2 - Mains
Levle 3 - Interview

CSAT is the first level which is used by UPSC to screen out most of the candidates or applicants through a Multiple choice format questions.
For this the syllabus is so general there is no need to select the optional subject at this stage.

The Optional selection comes into picture at the second level i.e.., Mains level here you need to select the option subject from the following list.

the list of optional subjects are

->Mathematics
->Agriculture
->Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
->Botany
->Chemistry
->Civil Engineering
->Commerce
->Economics
->Electrical Engineering
->Geography
->Geology
->Indian History
->Law
->Mathematics

->Medical Science
->Philosophy
->Physics
->Political Science
->Psychology
->Public Administration.

From these optionals you can select two of them which are relating and interesting to you so that you should feel happy while learning and practicing on the questions.

Now you are in reading degree engineering in ECE branch
but you want to prepare IAS exam.

Criteria :-

*Candidate pass graduation
*Must be an Indian
*Age - 21 to 30 years
5 years relax for SC/ST candidate
3 years for OBC candidate

*MAximum time attempts:-
4 times for General candidate
7 times for OBC candidate
No limits for SC/ST candidate

Now IAS exam is done 2 exams:-
*Preliminary exam(CSAT)
*Final exam

In preliminary there is only exam in Aptitude,Reasoning
And 1 optional paper:-

You can choose the subject from given beloe subject.

Candidate has to choose two subjects from a list of 25 optional subjects. Following are the not allowed combinations in the UPSC syllabus-

-> Political Science International relations and Public Administration,
-> Commerce Accountancy and Management,
-> Anthropology and Sociology,
-> Mathematics and Statistics,
-> Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Veterinary Science,
-> Management and Public Administration,
-> Any TWO branches of Engineering,
-> Medical Science and Animal Husbandry Veterinary Science,
-> Combination of TWO Literature

IAS - Indian Administrative Service

This exam is conducted by UPSC and is held every year.

The exam selects candidates through 3 stages:

Preliminary exam.
Main exam.
Interview.
