Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Government has banned all the universities in the state from offering PhD courses through distance learning. The ban has been implemented due to irregularities in PhD admissions coming to the forefront.
The decision has been taken after a recommendation of a committee set up by Governor E.S.L. Narasimhan that was aimed at bringing a discipline in the state universities. The authorities found some irregularities in giving doctorate degrees through distance learning. It has been found that many universities have opted for offering more PhD degrees to earn more revenue and even gave degrees in courses which were not taught in the university. While popular universities of the state- Osmania University and Andhra University which have been functioning since decades have offered less than 500 doctoral degrees, the Dravidian University which is only 10 years old has awarded about 8,000 PhDs to scholars. The officials have pointed out that from now on PhD courses will enrol admission for regular courses only. Moreover each university will have an ethic committee which will oversee the regular PhD admissions to maintain transparency and will check for irregularities as well. |
