No, it is not compulsory to have arts stream to become eligible to appear for Civil Service examination and become an I.A.S Officer.

The required eligibility to appear for the examination is that candidate must have passed bachelor degree in any discipline from a recognised university. The age limit is 21-32 years. Relaxation in upper age limit for reserved category.

So, you need to focus on your preparation for the examination. For more information visit at www.upsc.gov.in.

IAS stands for Indian Administrative Service and to become an IAS officer, you are required to qualify the Civil Services examination held by UPSC once every year.

Further, the minimum education required for appearing in the Civil Services examination is simply a graduation degree in any discipline from a recognized university.

So, as far you are concerned about the compulsion of opting Arts stream to become an IAS officer, then there is no such requirement and therefore you can opt any stream as per your interest and strength for your higher secondary school degree course and graduation degree.

For complete details and updates regarding the Civil Services examination, you can refer to the link www.upsc.gov.in.

UPSC requires its candidates to have an honest interest in the subjects they study, which can only come from perseverance. Arts as a course covers the widest range of subjects which could be taken up for higher studies and also provide a strong base for competitive exams.

The answer of your question is 'NO' because to become an IAS Officer, one has to clear the UPSC exam and to be eligible for this exam a candidate must hold a graduation from any university. There is no mention of arts or science in the eligibility criteria but i will suggest you to choose arts stream in 11th and 12th class since it covers very important chapters, topics which are asked in the UPSC exam.
