It includes the concepts of stress and strain, relationship in deformable solids, Hooke’s law, elastic constants and their relationship, axial and thermal stress, stresses on oblique section, 2D stress, Mohr’s diagram, Strain in 3D, Rosette, bending stress, radius of curvature and neutral axis position, composite beams, sign convention, intensity of loading, bending moment diagrams. Deflection of beams, built-in and continuous beams, torsion, stiffness and strength, springs, thin shells, thick cylinders, theory of columns are also included.

Paper Pattern: It consists of 10 questions out of which 5 have to be answered. All are subjective type. The choice is provided for the alternate questions. They may be sub-divided. Each question carries 20 marks and the division of the marks is based upon the number of subdivisions.

Time and Maximum Marks: Duration of exam is for 3 hours and the maximum marks are 100.

Key Points: Conceptual numericals may be included in the papers. Definitions and brief description of equipment, supporting theories and basic laws should be given priority and can be expected. Diagrams may be asked for around 30 marks.
