It would have been great if you would have mentioned your board whether you passed out from CBSE or WBBHSE or ISC. English is usually a compulsory subject for admission to undergraduate courses, including B.Sc. Physics, in most colleges and universities in India. It is advisable to check the admission eligibility criteria of St. Xavier's College, Kolkata to confirm whether English is required as one of the top four subjects for calculating the aggregate. However, as far as I know, the top four subjects, including English, are usually considered for calculating the aggregate marks required for admission. It is also important to note that admission criteria may vary between colleges and universities.

In some cases, the merit list may be prepared based on the aggregate of the top four subjects. In other cases, the merit list may be prepared using an index calculation, as you mentioned, which assigns a different weight to different subjects. But, most probably it is merit based for St. Xavier's College, Kolkata.

It is not necessary to include English unless it is the only language you learned in class 12. For instance, if you studied both English and Hindi in order to earn a higher grade in Hindi, you may substitute Hindi for English when calculating your top four percentages.

According to the University of Calcutta's eligibility criteria for admission to the B.Sc. course, English is a mandatory subject and should be included in the calculation of the aggregate. Therefore, it is advisable to include English in the top four subjects while calculating the aggregate required for admission to B.Sc. Physics at St. Xavier's College Kolkata.

However, it is always better to confirm this information by checking the official website of the college or contacting the admission department of the college to get accurate and up-to-date information.
