Acharya Nagarjuna University was established in the year 1976 on the 11th of September and it was inaugurated by the former Indian President Sri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed. Initially when the university was formed, it faced several start up difficulties. But, it had successfully marched against these difficulties and is continuing its service to the field of education for the past three decades.

The university was started just with 10 post-graduate courses. But, now it has achieved great progress not only through quantitative improvements, but also through qualitative developments in different academic fronts. This was made possible by the efficient and dedicated team of faculty. At present, the university is offering post-graduation in 47 different courses. Acharya Nagarjuna University is situated on the Calcutta and Chennai National Highway between the prominent cities of Vijayawada and Guntur in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is spread over a wide area of 293 acres.

Apart from affiliated colleges, the university has also got two postgraduate centers at Prakasam District and Krishna District. The university has also got six research centers concentrating on different areas of research like social problems, Afro Asian Philosophies, state and society with maximum orientation, women studies and public administration response to natural disasters. Initially, the name of the university was just Nagarjuna University and it was given the present name (i.e.) Acharya Nagarjuna University only after the year 2004.
