Deccan College Post Graduate and Research Institute is a PG institution for linguistics and archeology in the city of Pune and the institute came into existence in the year 1821 on the 6th of October. During its origin, the institute was running under the control of the Government of Bombay as a centre for UG and PG Studies offering western education according to the wish of its founder Mountstuart Elphinstone. The college was temporarily shut down in the year 1934 because of lack of funds, but was re-opened in the year 1939 on the 17th of August as an institute for PG education and research for promotion of higher research and learning in social sciences and indology.

When the institute was reopened, it had four teaching and research departments for sociology-anthropology, history, linguistics and archeology. Then in the year 1948, the institute was incorporated with the present University of Pune, whose name at that time was Poona University. In the year 1990 on the 5th of March, the institute was granted with the status of deemed-to-be-university by the HRD Ministry of Government of India. Then, the university began to function as deemed university from the 1st of June 1994 and from then, the university has been offering its own courses thereby conferring its own degrees.

Deccan College PG & Research Institute has only three departments under its control namely department of Archeology, department of Linguistics and department of Sanskrit & Lexicography and the university is dedicated towards offering courses on these subjects. By acting as a research institution, the university has so far done many publications on linguistics and archeology disciplines. Having began its journey as an institution, Deccan College of Post Graduate & Research Institute has been conferred the status of Deemed University by the Government of India, due to the excellence in education and research achieved by the university through its best quality educational and research activities.
