there are many private institution which offers Courses for Merchant Navy to candidates having less then 60% aggregate, but I will advice you not to go for them, as there is maximum chance of fraud or high donations.In some cases institutes show them self affiliate.

Age limit is different for different types of entries.

For Deck Cadet: 23 years.

For Officer: 25 years.

For Apparentice Engineer: 23 years.

For Engineering Cadets: upto 27 years.

Candidate must have passed 12th examination with Physics, Chemistry, English & Mathematics. The candidates must be born on or after 01.10.1985. For SC/ST, candidates mush have been born on or after 01.10.1980.Bachelor's course in Marine Engineering to enter as 5th Engineer or a Junior Engineer.Or do B.Sc. in Nautical Science from a Merchant Navy training institute to enter as a Deck Cadet.OR IIT-JEE exam and do an Engineering course to enter as Engine Cadet, 5th Engineer or Junior Engineer

You can do BSc Nautical Science after which you will be appointed as deck cadet. You can also do B.Tech in Marine engineering. There is Alternate Training Scheme for Marine Engineers (ATS) after 10+2.You need to pass the entrance exam which will be followed by an interview and physical test. The candidates should have good eyesight.

you have to appear IIT-JEE exam with +2 and simultaneously have to filll form for merchant navy . the selection for merchant navy will be based on IIT-JEE rank . if you comes in EML list of JEE then also you will be selected for course which you wanted. BEST OF LUCK.

For Getting into Engine Department, one has to start career from the post of "Fifth or Junior Engineer" which ultimately lead to Chief Engineer.

Qualification Required: A degree in Marine or Mechanical or electrical Engineering from a recognised Institute. MArine engineering holder will get in directly while Mechanical and Elecrical has to undergone 10 months Pre-Sea Training in MArine engineering, which is either offered by recruiting company or candidate has to born itself.


Eligibility: First class first pass.

Age Limit: 25 years.

Catering Rating: Any background will do. However, background in hotel management/Hospitality/Aviation/Cabin Crew etc. with experience in the hospitality business will be a great help.

In this field you need to upgrade your skills every nine months or so, through proficiency development or skill development courses in the maritime academies and pass examinations conducted by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS). This will be your key to new contracts.

For +2 Students

For getting into Deck or Navigating department one has to start there career from post of "Deck Cadet" after that one will moves toward Third Officer which ultimately leads to Captain/Master in long time of 8-10 years work experiance.

Qualification Required: One has to persue 3 years B.sc (Nautical science) alongwith 12 months of onship training. Or these days this B.sc degre gets split into parts by maximum institutes such that- 1 year Diploma in Nautical science, 1 1/2 years Onboard ship training and 6 months pre-sea training.



Eligibility: 12th (PCM) with at least 60% aggregate. However, few Institutes also accept students with 55% aggregate. For Ex- Trident college of marine technology, West Bengal.

Age Limit: 20 years for those who has +2, while its 22-23 years for B.sc Dgree holder.


One can join by sitting for the IIT entrance exam and filling a separate form for "Chanakya". If selected, it is a 3 year B.Sc. Nautical Science course from Mumbai University. You then need 12 months of training on a ship, after which you have to do the mandatory courses and give oral exams to get Second Mate's Certificate of Competency.

U can take admission in nautical science, marine engineering or cadet. duration is 3 and 4 years respectively. study regularly the employement news for date and procedure of form.

hi rishabh, if you are willing to join merchant navy after 12th then there are sevral entry schemes available to be a part of merchant navy. You can get admission in the following manner__
you can opt for GPR course for which minimum qualificatio is 10th pass with 50% marks in Eng, Maths and Science
You can join as Deck Cadet for which minimum qualification is 12 passout with min 55% marks in PCM
You can also join as Marine Engineering for you have to appear in entrance test

First of all you must be eligible to join merchant navy. There are three areas, namely-
1.Deck
2.Engine
3.Service department.
There are some renowned colleges provide marine engineering in India. Some of them are
1.Nautical science degree of Ts Chanakya, Mumbai
2.Marine Engineering Research Institute (MERI), Kolkata and Mumbai.
So for this you have to write Joint Entrance Exam conducted by IIT. The eligibility for this is 10+2 with physics, chemistry and maths.
Also, you can go for direct entry to deck cadet if you passe 10+2 with PCM.

For merchant navy we need just 12th class....with maths , physics and chemistry...

and your age should not be more than 20 years.....

U can join merchant navy after 10+2 as a deck cadet.
For this u need to clear the examinations and have to undergo a 3 months training period after that u'll be appointed as deck cadet.

You may take any of the numerous options available:
1-can take b.sc in nautical sciences from institutes like Bombay University,Vizag,Cochin.
2-can switch for a bachelors degree in Marine engineering at MERI Kolkata,IMI Noida,etc.
3-can take up a six months training as a deck cadet in any of the marine institutes(Beware of Frauds)registered at DGS..
