As you are in 3rd Year right now, so you can apply for GATE exam next year.
You must start preparing for GATE exam right now so that you can get good marks and ultimately secure good rank. In order to achieve good rank, start solving previous year question papers of GATE as much as possible related to your subject. Solving more and more questions will clear your concept and hence you will not face difficulties in solving question paper during exams.
