The NIT or SVNIT Surat being one of the NITs in India got established in the year 1961 being named after shri Vallabh Bhai Patel (the first home minister of India) and is one of the top 25 institutions of engineering in India. The campus is spread over a large 256 acres of land and is well equipped with all modern facilities for the students.

The college or the institute offers courses like engineering in various disciplines including Mechanical, electronics, computer, chemical, and electrical engineering. The institute also offers courses like applied physics, Applied mathematics, Applied chemistry, Applied Math & Human. The institute also offers M. Tech. and PhD programmes.

The college provides accommodations to its students in hostels and it offers rooms to 990 students and 191 units of staff quarters in the campus itself. There are seven hostels in the college including the on girl’s hostel and rest being boy’s hostel. Among other facilities the college has a guest house, a branch of SBI or state bank of India, a canteen, a Dispensary, a student’s store and some play grounds for games like cricket, basket ball and football. Apart from this the institute possess a central library at SVIT which supports all the courses, the institute offers and has all kinds of books, journals and electronic equipments providing e-learning. The institute also has a centralized computer centre which is linked via various servers and Internet facility is also provided to the students with each student maintaining access to the systems individually by a login ID provided to him.

To take admission for under graduate courses the students must appear for the exam conducted by CBSE or Central Board of Secondary Education i.e. All India Engineering Entrance Examination or AIEEE, every year. To take admissions in post graduation courses the students must have at least secured 60% marks in B. Tech. (relaxed by 5% for SC/ST candidates).
