Barasat Government College is one among a group of colleges coming under the direct management of the Government of West Bengal’s Higher Education Department. This higher education department is funding the college and initially the college was affiliated to Calcutta University. Later after some years, the college came under the jurisdiction of West Bengal State University.

Eligibility Criteria:
For getting admission to the honors degree in arts courses offered by the Barasat Government College, candidates must have completed their higher secondary examination with not less than 50% of aggregate marks and 45% in the subject in which the student is seeking admission. For B. Sc (hons.) in different subjects, students must have secured the marks as mentioned below:
• Geography – 60% of marks in Geography and 55% in aggregate
• Economics – 40% in English, 45% in mathematics and 50% in aggregate
• Zoology, Botany – 60% in biology and 55% in aggregate
• Mathematics – 60% in mathematics and 55% in aggregate
• Chemistry – 45% in mathematics, 60% in chemistry and 60% in aggregate
• Physics – 60% in both mathematics & physics and 50% in aggregate
