The city is the home for the popular Medical College, Kolkata, which has been offering medical education right from the year 1838. It is the medical education institution in the city with the highest intake capacity for MBBS course according to the approval of the Medical Council of India.
Intake capacity for MBBS course in Kolkata:
The city has five medical colleges that are functioning with approval from the Medical Council of India. Of these colleges, two colleges have an intake capacity of 100 students, other two colleges has an intake capacity of 150 students, while the Medical College, Kolkata as mentioned earlier has the highest intake capacity of 250 students per year for the MBBS course. Therefore, the city has an intake capacity of 650 students for the MBBS course.

All five medical colleges functioning in the city of Kolkata are affiliated to the West Bengal University of Health Sciences located in the same city. The university adds pride to the medical education scenario in Kolkata by acting as one of the few universities in the nation specially meant for medical and related education. Out of the five medical colleges, four are running under the control of the Government of West Bengal, while one college is running under private control. All course offered by these medical colleges including MBBS course are approved by the Medical Council of India and Government of West Bengal.
