Kerala Agricultural University came into the existence in the year 1971 on the 24th of February and it began its operations from the year 1972. With a view to attain a sustainable agricultural development in the state of Kerala, 21 research institutions and 2 educational institutions working under the jurisdiction of the Agriculture and Animal husbandry Department of the state government of Kerala were brought under one roof under the Kerala Agricultural University.

When the university was established the university was entrusted with the following responsibilities by the state Government of Kerala:

To make provisions for offering education in different branches of study pertaining to agriculture and its related disciplines like agricultural engineering, forestry, fisheries, co-operation, diary and veterinary science, animal husbandry and horticulture

Undertaking extension education in agriculture and its related fields

Introducing new research activities in agriculture and allied disciplines

Kerala Agricultural University is offering education under four different faculties of education namely agricultural engineering, fisheries, veterinary & animal sciences and Agriculture. The courses under these faculties are offered by the university through ten of its constituent colleges. Of these constituent colleges, two colleges are meant for offering education under veterinary and animal sciences; one college each for diary science & Technology, cooperation banking management, fisheries, forestry and agricultural engineering and three colleges are meant for agriculture faculty.

Totally 56 departments belonging to agricultural and allied disciplines are functioning under Kerala Agricultural University and the university is offering doctoral programmes through 23 departments. The university has the capacity to offer education to 65 students each year for the Doctoral courses, 215 students for Master’s level courses and 425 students for UG level courses. Among the 35 agricultural universities functioning in India, Kerala Agricultural University has obtained the pride of being the second best performing university in agricultural research and this pride was offered to the University by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research.
