Shivaji University came into existence in the year 1962 and it was formally inaugurated on the 18th of November in the same year by the then president of India Dr. Radhakrishnan. The university has jurisdiction over three districts in the state of Maharashtra namely Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur.

Initially, when the university came into existence in the year 1962, it had only 34 affiliated colleges under its jurisdiction with just 14000 students and five post graduate departments. However, now the University has under its jurisdiction 225 colleges that are located in these districts and has a student-strength of nearly 2 lakh students.  At present, the university has nearly 34 postgraduate departments in its campus through which different courses are offered.

Some of the departments functioning under Shivaji University are adult and continuing education, applied chemistry, food science & technology, law, zoology, sericulture, etc…and these departments are classified under the previously mentioned ten faculties of education. The university admits students to the different courses offered based on their performance in the qualifying examination, while for professional courses admission is based on their performance in the Common Admission Test conducted by the university.

In addition to the previously mentioned regular courses, the university is also offering MBA course through distance education mode. The university offers PG courses in arts and commerce through 27 affiliated colleges and it is also offering some self-supporting courses in the faculties of computer science, microbiology, biotechnology, etc…

Above all, the university is also offering bridge courses in different fields of economics like foreign trade, urban banking, co-operative management, mass communication education, etc…for the sake of students who have discontinued their education for some years for some reason or another.
