Shivaji University was set up in the year 1962 under the Shivaji University Act of 1962. The university was inaugurated by Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. The University is spread over three districts of Maharashtra, namely, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara. The University includes 225 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes.

The primary objective for establishing this university was to furnish the educational needs of South Maharashtra. The university provides opportunities of higher education accessible to rural youth. The university conducts fundamental and applied research in the field of science and humanities so as to ensure regional growth and development.
