University of Lucknow was formed in the year 1920 and it is located in the city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. The university is affiliated to Distance Education Council, Association of Indian Universities, Association of Commonwealth Universities and University Grants Commission. In addition to this, the university is accredited by Bar Council of India, National Council of Teacher Education and National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

university follows non-semester pattern for most of the courses, except for some courses like MBA and BBA. The university grew out of the Canning college of Lucknow, which was founded in the year 1867, and Isabella Thoburn College and King George’s Medical College.
