Wayanad District is located in the northeastern part of the state of Kerala and this district was established on the 1st of November 1980. The district was carved out of the Kannur and Kozhikode Districts and was formed as the 12th district of the state of Kerala. The district is spread over an area of 2132 km with a population of more than 7,50,000 people.

Previously higher education was a problem of the people of the district since there were only a few colleges in this district. However, the present situation is different since the district has three teacher training institutions, four B. Ed colleges, an industrial training institution, two polytechnic colleges and six first grade colleges in addition an engineering college. In addition to these colleges, the Wayanad District acts as the home for the recently established Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University, which is a public university established by the Government of Kerala to encourage, education, extension and research activities in the field of animal and veterinary sciences. The constituent units of the university are also working under the control of the Government of Kerala like the above-mentioned government colleges in the Wayanad District.
