The IJSO is an International annual team competition and as well as individual competition for fifteen year old students. IJSO is purely an educational event. This is done to promote the career of students as scientists and their future scientific collaboration. IJSO will develop the interest of students in natural sciences and also to develop the international contacts in the field of natural sciences. The aim of IJSO is to develop the gifted talents of the students in science and to encourage the participation of students in the study of natural science.

Structure of IJSO

The exam leading to IJSO is divided into five stages.

  • First Stage: National Standard Examination in Junior Science(NSEJS)
  • Second Stage: Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO)
  • Third Stage: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Junior Science
  • Fourth Stage: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IJSO
  • Fifth Stage: Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)

The detailed structure of the five stages is given below.

Stage 1: National Standard Examination in Junior Science(NSEJS)

This is the first stage of selection of students. This is organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT). Every student must enroll for NSEJS. All students who are qualified to appear for INJSO will get a certificate of merit from IAPT. This will be under the responsibility of IAPT. The NSEJS exams will be held at many centers across the country.

Stage 2: Indian National Junior Science Olympiad (INJSO)

This second stage of test is organized by the HBCSE. Students selected from the first stage are eligible for INJSO. Based on the performance in the first stage, top 300 students are selected for the second stage.

Stage 3: Orientation cum Selection Camp (OCSC) in Junior Science

This is also organized by HBCSE. This stage includes several theoretical and experiment tests. In experiments, orientation will be provided to the students. Top 35 students from the second stage are selected for this stage. From this third stage, top 6 students in the merit list are declared as special awardees. These students will constitute the six member team for International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO).

Stage 4: Pre-departure Training Camp (PDT) for IJSO

The selected students will undergo a training programme at HBCSE in theory and experiments. Training will be given by resource persons from HBCSE and various institutions across the country.

Stage 5: Participation in International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO)

The students and the three teachers will represent the International Junior Science Olympiad (IJSO) next year.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for each of the stages of the exam is as follows:

NSEJS : All students who are born on or after January 1, 1998 and are in class tenth are eligible for NSEJS 2012 - 2013.

INJSO : Students qualified from the first stage of examination and those who are exempted are eligible for INJSO.

OSCS : The students selected from the merit list of Stage II (INJSO) are eligible for this third stage. A six member student team will be selected at the end of third stage. This six member team of students will be eligible for the next two stages.

How to apply?

The students can apply for this Olympiad through their respective schools.

How to fill the form?

The students should check whether all the columns are filled correctly. They should not miss out on any of the columns. They should make sure there is no over writing. Each letter should be legible. The forms can be filled both offline and online. The students should refer to the official website before filling the application form. The details about how to fill the application form will be given in the website and the information brochure.

  • Date of NSEJS 2011: November 27, 2011 (Sunday)
  • Last Date for Enrollment for NSEJS: September 15, 2011
  • Date of INJSO 2012: January 28, 2012 (Saturday)
  • Dates of OCSC 2012: May 14 - June 2, 2012

The students all over India can appear for this Olympiad. The 9th IJSO will be held in Tehran, Iran tentatively in December 2012.

Study Plan for International Junior Science Olympiad

  • Set a time table.
  • The time table plan should gel with all other daily activities.
  • Plan the available time in a proper manner.
  • Make a list of the areas to be covered.
  • Divide the whole syllabus into small portions.
  • Be thorough in each of the portions.
  • Revise regularly the same.
  • Try to attend several practice tests.
  • Do not study for a long time as it increases stress.

The results will available in the official website on the date of publication of the result.

Score Validity

The score of the IJSO is valid for twelve months.
