Indian Council of Historical Research was founded as a registered society. The council came into existence by the fund raised by Department of Higher Education of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. The council has its regional centres located at Guwahati and Bangalore. ICHR North-East Regional Centre (Guwahati) and ICHR Southern regional Centre (Bangalore) are the two regional centres of the council. Sabyasachi Bhattacharya is the present chairman of the council. The major objective of the council is to promote balanced distribution of reserach effort over different areas.
