Kottayam is a town in the Indian State of Kerala, which is spread over an area of 55.4 km2. The town is the administrative headquarters of the Kottayam District and it is located in the south-central part of the state of Kerala about 150 kms from the capital city of state being Thiruvananthapuram.

The town is acting as an important trading centre for commercial crops and spices, particularly rubber and the town is popularly known as Akshara Nagari as an honor towards the contribution made by it to literature and print media. Kottayam holds the pride of being the first municipality to earn 100% literacy well before in the year 1989 itself.
