Dear friend, to be eligible for IAS preliminary exam you should be below the age of 30 years is you are in general category.

For general and OBC category people the age limit is in between 21 to 30 years and the chances to attempt for the exam are limited to 4 and 7 respectively.

For SC/ST category the age relaxation is upto 5 years i.e. they can appear for the exam till the age of 35 and there is no limit on the chances available for attempting for the exam for the SC/ST candidates.

You are still below 30 years so anyhow you are still eligible to take the exam as you are giving it for the first time.

dear friend,
My friend according to your date of birth you are able to appear in IAS exam for once only..

Age eligibility for IAS exam:-

1.Candidates age should be in between 21-30 years.
For SC/ST the upper age relaxation is 5 years and for OBC the upper age relaxation is 3 years.

As your date of birth is 20-10-1982, then you can appear in IAS exam for once only..

After 20-10-2012 you will cross the age limit, so you will not be able to appear in IAS exam after that..

You have to clear the exam at the very first attempt..

All the best.

The number of attempts allowed for IAS examination is different for different category.

The number of attempts allowed for different categories is given below:

General Category - 4 attempts

OBC Category - 7 attempts

SC/ST Category - No limit

So you can calculate your attempts according to above criteria.

Age Limit for IAS Exam:

General Category - 21 to 30 years

OBC Category - 21 to 33 years

SC/ST Category - 21 to 35 years

Selection will be based on merit and you have to perform very well in the examination.

-Preliminary Exam

-Mains Exam

-Personality Test

You can start your preparation as soon as possible because the syllabus for IAS exam is very vast and the questions can come from any topic. In mains exam you have to write descriptive answers means you should have proper knowledge of every subjects then only you can succeed.

You have to opt for 2 subjects in Mains exam. One will be literature of a particular language and other will be a subject of your choice from the list.
