CLAT stands for Common Law Admission Test. This exam is for candidates who want to study LLB course after completing 12th standard. You have raised a very good point. The timing of CLAT preparation is very important.

One thing that people should understand is that CLAT is not an easy exam to crack. It requires months of preparation to perform well in the CLAT Exam. If you start to prepare for the exam like 2-3 months in advance, it would put a lot of strain on you. Therefore ensure you are giving yourself enough time to start preparing for the CLAT Exam.

Now you are studying in the 11th standard. My recommedation would be that you start preparing for the CLAT after passing the 11th standard. You can start taking coaching classes after 11th. However coaching classes alone would not help you crack the CLAT entrance exam because a lot of questions in CLAT are related to general knowledge.

Let's first see the syllabus of CLAT Exam.

The CLAT exam contains 200 questions of total 200 marks. Candidates are given 2 hours to complete the CLAT Exam.

Subjects:

General English - 40 Marks

General Knowledge/Current Affairs - 50 Marks

Elementary Maths (Numerical Ability) - 20 Marks

Legal Aptitude - 45 Marks

Logical Reasoning - 45 Marks

Since GK related questions are worth 50 marks, you should start preparing for these questions on your own. You can do the following:

1. Read newspapers like Times of India/Hindu/Hindustan Times.

2. Watch news everyday and keep yourself updated with current events.

3. You can also check latest news on Google News Search.

The most difficult part of the CLAT exam would be Legal Aptitude. To prepare for this 45 marks section do the following:

1. Start reading news about latest court cases and laws.

2. You can also do the same through Google News.

3. It is important to study how judge came to the verdict. What logic was put behind.

Others things to prepare for CLAT Exam are;

Buy good books related to English Grammar since English is also very important.

You should also buy good books on reasoning topics and study them.

Learn the Algebric formulas.

Start taking sample paper test and give yourself 2 hours to complete them.

Evaluate your performance after each sample paper test.

Tips to Crack CLAT:
  • This year CLAT Exam was conducted by the National University during the month of May. Which means even after giving your board exam you will get some time to revise for this exam. So i would recommend you to not take any pressure from now. Even if you start preparing for it from class 12 then also you will pass with flying colors. Let me tell you many of my friends used the last one month before the exam and did quite well.
  • But in order to get good marks in any exam regularity is the key. So if you can start in an advance then you will be one step ahead of your competitors. First and foremostly let me tell you that for this exam lots of questions will test your knowledge about current affairs. So your general knowledge needs to be very good.
  • So to keep yourself updated about recent facts and figures start seeing lots of news channel and read newspapers and magazines daily. If you think some news are of vital importance then cut that portion and keep it in a separate file. Manorama Yearbook or other such general knowledge books will also come in handy.
  • Other important sections will come in your grip only when you keep on practicing the papers. There will be questions where you need to rack your brain and some will need basic application of common sense. Your mind will start working only when you get used to them. None of the section is extremely tough or difficult to crack but you need to practice them hard to save time during exam time.
  • It is always a good idea to practice the old CLAT papers because then you will get accustomed with the question pattern and the areas to stress on. The question papers are generally available in the National University itself or you might get some by searching net as well. It will also help if you can get the help of someone who has given this exam before.
  • Since for this exam you need to mug and cram a lot of information like names of important personalities, awards and other such stuff so the advice would be to make short notes of them and every now and then if you can go through them then they will get saved in your mind.
  • Dont overstress yourself especially on the last few days. Keep that only to revise the notes that you have prepared. You should remember that its all in the mind. If you can keep your head cool and maintain a postive attitude then everything else will take care of itself.
