About the BSc(N)

As the basic preparation for a nursing career, McGill University’s Bachelor of Science (Nursing) offers innovative courses that develop fundamental nursing expertise and skills and opens the door to a variety of exciting career opportunities.

Student involvement is a cornerstone of our program. In addition to classroom lectures, you will study in small learning groups of six to eight people, working closely with professors to examine, in critical and creative ways, the many facets of nursing in today’s society. Furthermore, starting with your first nursing course, you will gain hands-on experience and knowledge in a McGill teaching hospital or affiliated centre, where you will learn to help people manage health and illness situations.

More specifically, this will involve studying individuals and families at various stages of development and in different locations – at home, in community health-care agencies and in teaching hospitals. You will learn about the role of nursing within the health-care system and about the development of collegial partnerships with other health science disciplines.

The BSc(N) curriculum extends over three years (including summer sessions) with general and professional courses in each year, and equips you with the expertise and confidence to effectively deal with complex and contemporary nursing issues. Some students will study for four years, in particular students entering McGill directly from high school or mature students who need to complete college level science courses. The program ends with a five week clinical placement that can be completed internationally. Admission requirements

We have many inquiries about our program so have tried to summarize key information about our science admission requirements in this section. For complete information, please consult the Undergraduate Admissions Guide.

Regardless of the type of applicant that you are, McGill requires a strong background in the basic sciences of chemistry, biology, physics, and calculus. All applicants are assessed on whether they have completed some or all of the following freshman level science courses:

Two semesters of biology with labs (equivalent to McGill BIOL 111 & 112)
Two semesters of general chemistry with labs (equivalent to McGill CHEM 110 & 112)
One semester of organic chemistry with lab (equivalent to McGill CHEM 212)
Two semesters (three if CEGEP) of physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics) with labs (equivalent to McGill PHYS 101 & 102)
One semester in each of differential and integral calculus (equivalent to McGill MATH 140 & 141)

Mature applicants

The Mature Student category is available to applicants who: are 23 years of age at time of registration, have Canadian citizenship or Canadian permanent residency, do not possess a conventional basis of admission such as a high school or CEGEP diploma, or have academic credentials that do not meet the minimum requirements and have no academic studies within the last five years that would constitute a basis for admission.

Applicants with regular academic studies completed during the last five years must apply under the regular high school, CEGEP, or university transfer categories.

Mature student applicants require a minimum of three of the above courses with ONE in functions (pre-calculus) (calculus is preferred), and two courses of the following three: general biology, chemistry or physics (all with labs) (e.g., biology AND chemistry OR chemistry AND physics OR biology AND physics) (each of the courses must be completed with a minimum university grade of 70% or equivalent).

These minimum courses must be equivalent to the McGill freshman courses listed above and can be taken at a local CEGEP or other university. While the minimum three courses are needed for admission consideration, ALL of the courses listed must be completed prior to continuing with the 106-credit Nursing program – you can either continue in the CEGEP or other university to complete them or complete the remainder with us at McGill.

Mature applicants who have not studied science in high school will likely be required by the CEGEP or other university to complete preparatory courses as per their institution.
Transfer and second degree applicants

Applicants require a minimum of the following to be considered for admission: two semesters of calculus plus two semesters of biology, chemistry and/or physics (all with labs).

These minimum courses must be equivalent to the McGill freshman courses listed above and can have been taken at a local CEGEP or other university. While the minimum four courses are needed for admission consideration, ALL of the courses listed below as ‘science requirements’ must be completed prior to continuing with the 106-credit Nursing program. Strong applicants with less than the required minimum prerequisites may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
One semester of differential calculus
One semester of integral calculus
Two semesters of biology with labs
Two semesters of general chemistry with labs
One semester of organic chemistry with lab
Two semesters of physics (mechanics, electricity and magnetism, waves and optics) with labs

Applicants with a previous science degree, and missing one or more of freshman science courses may be granted equivalence if credit and exemption is awarded for upper level science courses (e.g., physiology, pharmacology) which are part of the 106-credit B.Sc.(N.) program.
