There are 2 sections in the Metallurgy question paper and the student has to answer three questions from each section. The answers to each section must be written on separate answer sheets provided. The answers have to be supplemented with diagrams as and where necessary, students are allowed to use calculators, logarithmic tables and steam tables wherever necessary. The questions all carry different marks, which are indicated alongside. Some of the important questions are: define cold working, draw the microstructure of steel before and after cold working and explain the reasons why cold worked materials are annealed, classify the variations of crystal imperfections, explain with the help of neat diagrams screw dislocation and volume defects, explain free cutting steels with respect to composition and machinability. In the second section, the questions are: explain the important heat treatment processes like annealing, normalizing, spheroidising, hardening and tempering, state the advantages and applications of powder metallurgy technique.
