Prosthodontics is also called as Prosthetic Dentistry or Dental Prosthetics and it is one among the specializations in the dental sciences approved by the Royal Australian College of Dental Surgeons, Royal College of Dentists of Canada and American Dental Association. It is field of dentistry dealing with the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of appearance, comfort, function and health of oral functions on patients with deficient or missing teeth.

Criteria for selection of students for MDS Prosthodontics admission:

In the aforesaid government dental colleges that are approved by Dental Council of India, students are admitted to the MDS course based on the marks secured by them in the BDS course. DCI has laid that in the process of admission, preference should be given to candidates who have working experience as staff of central or state government services, clinical assistants, surgeons and university teachers of serving in defence services or in rural areas. Selection of candidates should be done by colleges with the help of selection committee with postgraduate teachers in the concerned departments of dental surgery as members of the committee according to DCI.

Syllabus for MDS Prosthodontics:

A short description of the areas of study covered under MDS Prosthodontics course is given below:

Study of mechanical and biological consideration pertaining to different kinds of dentures and allied prosthesis

Study of techniques, procedures and principles related to building and maintenance of different kinds of dentures and allied prosthesis inclusive of the material to be used for these procedures.

Study of human masticatory apparatus and its functions in deranged occulusal states, health and in conditions pertaining to complete or partial lose of facial structures and/or teeth.

Duration of the course and admission procedure:

Normally, the duration of MDS Prosthodontics course is three years and in addition to the aforesaid selection process of candidates, they will also have to get through the entrance examination conducted for admission of students to the different branches of MDS course.

Future scope of MDS Prosthodontics degree holders:

Not only MDS Prosthodontics graduates, but also MDS graduates from other branches can have a very good future prospects since people have started to realize the importance of dental care these days and with the increasing number of dental colleges and hospitals, these professionals can have a very good job prospects in the future.
