Medicine is an art and science of healing and it includes a number of health care practices evolved for the purpose of maintaining and restoring the health of people by preventing and treating illness in them. Contemporary system of medicine applies medical technology, biomedical research and health science for identifying and treating injuries and diseases through medicines or through surgery.

The field also uses diverse therapies like ionizing radiation, biologics, prostheses, traction, external splints and psychotherapy, etc… for treating different medical disorders in human beings. The term ‘medicine’ itself was derived from a Latin word called Medicina, the meaning of which is art of healing. Ph. All India Institute of Medical Sciences or AIIMS is the statutory autonomous body under the control of a ministry of the Indian government.

Eligibility requirement for admission to Ph. D in Medicine in AIIMS:

For seeking admission to the Ph. D course in Medicine, candidates must possess the qualifications as mentioned below:

Master of Science or PG in any subjects pertaining to bio medical sciences or PG in Nursing securing at least 60% of marks or Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine  or its equivalent diploma or degree of the National Board of Examination in the discipline of medicine

Before doing any of the aforesaid PG courses, they must have studied MBBS from an institution approved by the Medical Council of India and must have secured not less than 55% of aggregate marks in the course

Duration of Ph. D in Medicine course:

The duration of Ph. D in Medicine shall be the time period from registration by a candidate for Ph. D course until the period of submission of thesis by the candidate. The minimum period of completion of Ph. D course shall be three years, maximum period is five years, and candidates will be required to complete their thesis submission before this period.

Method of Selection:

AIIMS makes selection of candidates for Ph. D course in different disciplines inclusive of Ph. D in Medicine by following the two steps mentioned below:

In the admission process, first comes the written test for 80 marks and the time allowed for this Ph. D entrance examination is 90 minutes. The question paper for Ph. D in medicine will have questions related to this field and it will be of MCQ format and short answer question format. For MCQ questions there will be a negative marking of 1/3rd for every wrong answer with one mark for each correct answer. The results of this written examination will be published in the website of the institute

Candidates succeeding in the written entrance test by securing not less than 50% of marks will be invited for departmental/clinical/practical lab-based assessment and this state carries 20 marks. The number of candidates called for departmental assessment will be on the ratio of three times the number of seats advertised for that particular Ph. D course

Admission of student to the Ph. D in medicine course will be according to the availability of funds/fellowships from approved funding agencies. Candidates submitting the evidence of availability of funds/grants/fellowship only will be given with the offer letter through the department of medicine functioning under AIIMS

With more and more competition among the students for seeking admission to the different courses offered by AIIMS, there is a tough competition for admission to the courses offered by the institute irrespective of whether it is a UG, PG or even Ph. D course, which is applicable to Ph. D in medicine as well.
