Government Colleges for Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) Course
To the surprise of professionals in the field of pharmacy, a course leading to professional degree in Pharmacy called as Doctor of Pharmacy of Pharm. D was initiated in the year 1955 at the University of California in San Francisco. Pharm. D course was introduced in India with the approval of Government of India by the Pharmacy Council of India, which is a six-year course and in addition to this, Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) course, whose duration is three-years was also introduced.
The first batch of students from Indian Colleges for the Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) course will be completing their degrees in the year 2011. Totally 16 colleges are offering Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate and Pharm. D course in India, which includes a government college as well, whose name is given below:

Details about Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate Course):
As mentioned earlier, the duration of Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate Course) is three years, which includes one year of residency or internship and two-years of study. Normally, this course is divided into two phases of which first phase includes the first and second academic year, while the second phase includes the residency/internship programme to be taken up by the students during the second year.
During this internship programme, candidates are offered with clinical pharmacy services or pharmacy practice under the supervision of faculty members in such a way that the candidates will be able to function independently in the future. The internship programme should be completed by the candidates in a hospital with more than 300 beds (i.e.) it should be completed in a reputed hospital.
Eligibility for seeking admission to the Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) course:
For seeking admission to the Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) course candidates must have completed their Bachelor of Pharmacy from an institution recognized by the Pharmacy Council of India under Sec.12 of the Pharmacy Act.
Subjects covered under Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) Course:
Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) course covers all subject taught at the UG and PG level of the Pharmacy course and some of the key subjects covered are pharmaceutical formulations, medicinal chemistry, jurisprudence, biochemistry, microbiology, pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, Pharmacognosy and pharmaceutics. Some of the new subjects like hospital pharmacy, community pharmacy, clinical pharmacy, clinical toxicology, pathophysiology, biostatistics, phamaco-economics, pharmaco-epidemiology and clinical research are also offered in this three-year course.

There is a wide range of job opportunities to the Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) graduates in different fields ranging from teaching to research and candidates can take up any field based on their career preference and interest.
The main aim behind the introduction of this course by the Pharmacy Council of India is to improve the standard of Pharmacy Professionals in India with respect to practicing in this field and also to make the pharmacy degree acceptable in different countries like the United States and United Kingdom. Therefore, Pharm. D (Post Baccalaureate) degree holders can explore job prospects not only in India, but in foreign countries as well.
