Haridwar District, which is also spelled as Hardwar is a district in the Indian state of Uttaranchal, which is also called as Uttarakhand. The headquarters of the district is the city of Haridwar, which acts as the largest city of the district as well. The district is surrounded by the district of Pauri Garhwal in the east, Dehradun in the east and north and the Muzaffarnagar, Bijnor district belonging to the state of Uttar Pradesh to the south and Saharanpur district to the west.

The district is regarded as one of the seven holiest places in the region of Hinduism. Ayurvedic Colleges:

State Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Gurukul Kangri is one among the oldest institutions in the state and the college came into existence in the year 1922. The college was provincialized by the state government in the year 1978 and it is presently government by the government of Uttarakhand. The college offers ayurvedic education with affiliation from the HNB Garhwal University and it offers Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medical Science course, whose duration is five years and six months. Admission is done based on the written entrance examination called PAT Uttarakhand purely on merit basis for the intake capacity of 50 students per year for the BAMS course.

Rishikul State Ayurvedic College & Hospital is the first government Ayurvedic College in the state that came into existence in the year 1919 and the college is presently offering BAMS course with affiliation from the HNB Garhwal University. In addition to BAMS course with an intake capacity of 60 students, the college also offers MD in Ayurveda in Bhaishajya Kalpana and Ras-Shastra with an intake capacity of 7 students per year. Selection of students to the college is done based on UPMT score according to the reservation policy of the state government.

Engineering College:

Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is a 150 year old institution that has been declared as the nation’s seventh Indian Institute of Technology recently in the year 2001. The institute offers UG degree courses in 10 disciplines of engineering and architecture and PG degree courses in 55 disciplines of engineering, planning, architecture and applied sciences. The institute also has the facility for doctoral work in all its departments and admission of students to the UG courses in engineering and architecture is done based on the Joint Entrance Examination conducted jointly by IITs in India.

Arts and Education College:

Government Degree College, Laksar came into existence in the year 2001 on the 10th of August and the college is a co-education, non-minority institution owned by the Government of Uttarakhand. The college offers B. Ed course with affiliation from the H.N.B. Garhwal University with an intake capacity of 200 students per year. In addition to teacher education course, the college also offers arts course in subjects like sociology, geography, political science, history, economics, English and Hindi.

Apart from these government colleges, several other private colleges are also functioning form the district of Haridwar in Utaranchal.
