Bharathidasan University was formed in the year 1982 on the month of February and the university was named after the Tamil Poet, Mr. Bharathidasan, who has made great revolution through his poems. The university’s motto is to create a brave world on the basis of the words of this poet and the university has kept up its motto by creating a new brave world of academics in the region of Tiruchirappali.

The campus of the university is spread over an area of 1000 acres and apart from this main campus; it has got another city campus. The jurisdiction of the university is spread over districts like Tiruchirapalli, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur, Pudukottai, Perambur and Nagapattinam and among the colleges affiliated to the university almost half of the colleges are offering PG courses, while 1/4th of the colleges are offering Ph. The central library of the university was established in the year 1982 and the library began to function on the present building from the year 1997 and the library includes sections like reprography, audio visual centre, digital library, technical section, periodicals, circulation, reference and stack. In addition to offering regular degree programs through affiliated colleges, the university is also offering certificate, PG diploma, UG and PG courses through distance education.
