Maharishi Markandeshwar University was previously called as Maharishi Markandeshwar Educational Trust, which was established in the year 1993 with the objective of economic, educational and social upliftment of the society. The university was given this name in honor of a devotee of Lord Shiva Maharishi Markandeshwar. The university is acting as a symbol of quality education in the streams of medicine, professional and technical courses in the northern part of the country for the past 17 years. In addition to the main campus at Ambala, the university has also got campuses at Solan and Karnal and these campuses were established as a part of extension plan laid by the authorities of the university. The main campus of the university has been developed as a small township spreading over an area of 180 acres of land and it is provided with several modern amenities for the benefits of the students and staff. The campus of the university comprises of independent blocks for different institutions working under it and 12 hostels are functioning under the university, out of which three are centrally air-conditioned with a student-accommodation capacity of 5097. Students are feeling at home at hostels because of the nutritious, well-balanced and wholesome meals offered. There is also a separate residential sector for administrative staff and faculty members of the college.
