Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth came into existence in the year 1972 on the 18th of May and it is an agricultural university located in the district of Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. The university got its present name in the year 2001 and earlier it was just Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth. The university owns a research centre at Karjat from where different varieties of rice has been produced. The main focus of the university are fisheries, horticulture and rice. The university holds the pride of having received the Best Institute award from the Indian Council of Agricultural Research during the year 1997.

The jurisdiction of Dr. Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi University is spread over five districts of the state of Maharashtra namely Ratnagiri, Brihan-Mumbai, Sindhudarg, Thane and Rajgad. The main aim of the university is to engage in agricultural education, research and extension education in such a way that sustainable agricultural development can be brought about in the agricultural field of the Konkan Region.
