Barkatullah University was previously known as Bhopal University and it was formed in the year 1970 in the city of Bhopal. In the year 1988, Bhopal University was named as Barkatullah Vishwavidhyalaya in honor of the freedom fighter Prof. Barkatullah, who was basically from Bhopal.

The campus of the university is situated in Jabalput-Jaipur National Highway in approximately 360 acres of land, which includes several buildings, inclusive of teaching departments. The teaching departments of the university lay emphasis on the interdisciplinary research and teaching. Eight districts in the city of Bhopal are coming under the jurisdiction of this university and they are Rajgrah, Betul, Harda, Hoshangabad, Raisen, Vidisha and Sehore.
