Kannur University came into existence in the year 1996 by an Act of the Kerala Legislative Assembly. Actually, it came into existence in the year 1995 with a different name called as Malabar University with objective of establishing itself as an affiliating, residential and teaching university in the state of Kerala. The university is offering education through its four different campuses each at Payyanur, Thalaserry, Mananthavady and Mangattupuramba.
