The Kerala University of Health Sciences came into existence through the Kerala University of Health Sciences Act 2010 for making sure of systematic and proper teaching and instruction, research and training in different types of medicines like modern medicine, Indian system of medicines like unani, naturopathy, yoga, sidhha, ayurveda and homoeopathy. The university aims to have uniformity in different educational programmes in medical and allied subjects in the state of Kerala.

The university is located in the city of Thrissur and it is mandated to affiliate all institutions and college in the state of Kerala for imparting professional education in the field of health care. Presently, more than 200 colleges in state of Kerala offering education in the faculty of medicine are affiliated to this university.
