Sri Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit came into existence in the year 1993 and the university is functioning from the state of Kerala. The university is situated in the banks of the river Poorna and it was given this name in honor of the great Philosopher and Sage Sri Adi Sankaracharya. The university is working towards the objective of preservation and publication of books and manuscripts in Sanskrit and other languages. The university has nine regional centers each at Payyanur, Koyilandy, Tirur, Ettumanoor, Thuravoor, Panmana, Thrissur and Thirvananthapuram. It is acting as an affiliating university with its jurisdiction spread over the entire state of Kerala.

Sree Sankaraharya University of Sanskrit has won several awards for its achievement and some of the achievements of the university are:

• A Manuscript collection drive was conducted by the university under a scheme of Ministry of Human Resource of Government of India with a view to strengthen Sanskrit studies in the local region

• The university is the nodal agency for implementation of Gandhi Darshan Program conducted with a view to mobilize gandhian values in the state of Kerala

• The university is also acting as a nodal agency for implementation of the project called strengthening of Sanskrit in the state of Kerala

• A 100-hour documentary was prepared by the university on koodiyattom

• A 100-hour documentation on chanting of Samaveda was also prepared
