The SSLC Examinations are conducted thrice a year in the month of March-April, June-July and September-October. It is a two and a half hour examination. It includes subjects like Tamil, English, Math, Science and Social Science. In case of languages, each has two papers under it. A minimum of 35% is required in each of the subjects to successfully clear the exam. One can get a percentage up to 94% on account of superior performance.

Eligibility for the exam requires that a student has appeared and cleared the Government Exam held at the end of STD X.

In case of Tamil, the duration of the paper is three hours. The total marks of the exam are 125 marks. The paper comprises of two parts – Parts A and B. In the former, the questions are multiple choice ones with sufficient space given to write the answers. One question carries one mark with the total number of questions being 50.

The second part comprises mainly of descriptive questions. The total number of questions in this section is 28. Most of these questions are from the syllabus. Each question is assigned different number of marks. The marks range mainly from one line answers of one mark to short compositions of five marks.
