Annamalai University is situated in Annamalainagar, near the town of Chidambaram, the abode of lord Nataraja. The University has a lush green campus, spread over more than 1000 acres, which houses its colleges, playgrounds and the hostels. This makes it one of the Universities with largest residential campuses. The University has a Directorate of Distance Education. This Directorate provides education to the needy students on a distance learning mode. The University provides postgraduate degrees in subjects like Bioinformatics and Law and it is the first university of our country to do so.

The University offers many undergraduate courses in various disciplines. One such degree offered by Annamalai University is B.A. (Bachelor of Arts). One can do this course in Sociology. This is a three years course. The subject of History of Social Thought is in the third year of the course. The paper of this subject is a 100 marks paper with three hours time duration. There are 10 questions in the paper with a choice to answer to any 5. All the questions are of equal marks and carry 20 marks each. The questions are so set that they cover the entire syllabus. The exam is held twice a year.
