Kerala is the state with highest literacy rate in the nation and the state topped the Education Development Index among 21 other major states in India during the survey conducted in the year 2006-07. The education system in the state has been developed by institutions aided or owned by government of Kerala.

In the education system followed in the state school education will be for 10 years, which is divided into three groups namely high school, primary and lower primary and after 10 years of secondary schooling, students will have to enroll in higher secondary schooling in any of the three streams namely science, commerce and liberal arts.
