Gujarat Ayurved University was established in the year 1967 by a legislative act of the Gujarat State. The university holds the pride of being the first of its kind not only at the national level, but at the international level as well. The university is meant exclusively for conducting education and research in the field of Ayurveda. The special status of the university can be understood by its administrative link with the state and central ministry of health and family welfare. It is an autonomous institution financed wholly by the state government of Gujarat. The university is performing the act of management of colleges and institutions located in its campus apart from conducting examination for all diplomas and degrees awarded by it. Gujarat Ayurved University is divided into three wings, they are affiliated ayurveda colleges whose examinations are conducted by the university, colleges working in the campus of the university & constituent colleges, and the final wing is centers working directly under the university & administrative wing. The university is presently conducting research in the fields of clinical, drug and literacy in the field of Ayurveda. In the year 1999, a centre called as international centre for ayurvedic studies was opened by the university with the objective of teaching ayurveda in foreign countries. With the view to support the teaching staff, the units like press & publication, Ayurvedic Pharmacy, medicinal plants garden and central library are functioning in the campus of the university.
