Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani, Rajasthan
It was established in the year 1929 and was founded by Dr, Ghanshyam Das Birla. It was initially established as an intermediate college. The institute is commonly abbreviated as “BITS Pilani”, and it is an institute of science & technology. BITS Pilani has its campus as Pilani, in the State of Rajasthan in India. The other campuses of the institute are located in Dubai and Goa and it also has an extension centre in Bangalore in India. It is the first institution of India to have a campus outside the country. It is a fully residential institute which is supported privately.
The institute offers 4 years integrated programmes. They are called integrated since the mathematics and physics are considered a part of each course and no intermediate courses like B.SC are provided by the institute. The various courses offered are B.E., B.Pharm hons. M.SC hons, M.SC technology
The admissions in the institute are entirely on the basis of merit and do not consider any reservations. The Pilani, Hyderabad and Goa campuses take admissions one the basis of a computerised entrance examination conducted all over India which is called BITSAT. This entrance test is exclusive to the BITS University. Knowledge, analytical and reasoning abilities of the candidate is tested in English, Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics & Logical Reasoning. It also considers the marks of the students as obtained in the higher secondary curriculum. The university exempts the toppers of 12th standard examination of each board from the BITSAT test and gives them direct admission to the university. The admission in the Dubai campus of the institute is on the basis of the merit results of the12th standard exam and it does not require any other entrance test.
The campus at Pilani is located 217 km north of Jaipur and 220 km west of Delhi. The campus is built of a land of 328 acre. It has 11 boys’ hostels and 1 girl hostel with the necessary facilities as required by the students.
