Students can select Tamil as their first language in the SSLC examination conducted by the Karnataka Secondary Examination Education Board. The details of the examination of Tamil are given below.

The exam is of three hours. The grand total of the exam is 125 marks. There are two parts in the test- Part A and Part B. the questions in Part A are all multiple choice type questions. Space is provided to write the answers. Students can select the answer of their choice, out of the four alternative answers given, and write it in the space given. Each question is of 1 mark and the number of questions is 50.

Descriptive questions are there in the second part. The number of questions in the section is 28. The questions are of diversified range. Questions are from texts included in the syllabus. Questions from poetry can also be expected. Some questions are of 1 mark. Also, there are questions carrying 2, 3 and 4 marks. Questions from grammar also constitute an important part of the paper. Short notes carrying 4 marks are also there. Questions from composition are given at end. Composition includes letters, paragraphs, essays, stories etc. these questions usually carry 5 marks.
