The GATE Architecture and Planning Paper is a 100 marks paper to be written in the total time frame of three hours. It is an all objective type questions paper. There are four alternatives given after each question from which there is only one correct answer. The answer has to be marked by the candidate in a separate response sheet provided by the supervisor. All the questions in the paper are from the syllabus itself.

There are 20 questions carrying one mark each and another 40 questions carrying 2 marks each. All questions have to be answered by darkening the correct response on the response sheet. Only one answer is acceptable. There is negative marking on the paper. With every incorrect response from the first 20 questions the candidate loses half mark and with every incorrect response from the remaining questions the candidate loses two third marks. All these marks are deducted from the total score acquired by the candidate. There is rough sheet provided at the end of the paper to do any kind of calculation or solving. The paper is mostly a speed and accuracy test and aims to see how fast one can respond appropriate answers.
