Mahatma Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute was established in the year 2001. The institute works under the control of the Sree Balaji Educational and Charitable Public Trust. The institute is affiliated to the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University.

The institute is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI), New Delhi. The institute is recognized by the Government of Puducherry.

The undergraduate course available in the institute is MBBS.

The Post Graduate Diploma available in the institute are DA (Anaesthesiology), DCH (Child Health), DD (Dermatology, Venerology and Leprosy), DGO (Obstetrics & Gynaecology), DO (Ophthalmology), D.Ortho (Orthopaedics),  DPM (Psychiatry), DMRD (Radio-diagnosis), DTBCD (Tuberculosis & Chest Diseases), DLO (ENT).

Eligibility criteria for getting admission:

The candidates, who have passed intermediate or equivalent examination (with Physics, Chemistry, and Biology subjects) with at least 50% marks (40% for  SC / ST candidates), are eligible to apply for the MBBS course. They must get qualified in the SBVUMCET exam conducted by the Sri Balaji Vidyapeeth University to get admission for the MBBS course.

The candidates, who have passed MBBS degree with minimum of 2 years experience, are eligible to apply for the Post Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate courses. They must get qualified in the CETPGMC exam conducted by the state government of Pondicherry in order to get admission for the Post Graduate and Diploma courses.
