Noorul Islam University came into existence in the year 1989 and the institution came into existence in the name of Noorul Islam College of Engineering. The university is one among the different deemed universities functioning in India and it is under private control. The university is working under the control of the Noorul Islam Centre for Higher Education Society. The growth plan of the university is to become a leading educational and research university in the world to produce employable graduates, to impart globally competitive education and to offer application-oriented courses with higher social relevance.

Previously, Noorul Islam College of Engineering was affiliated to the Anna University and some of the departments of the college were recognized as research centre by the Anna University. These departments are department of mathematics, department of management studies, department of electrical & electronics engineering and department of mechanical engineering. The university is an ISO 9001:2000 certified institution and the different disciplines in which the university offers education are converted into different schools of excellence. Noorul Islam University offers all these courses according to the norms issued by the All India Council for Technical Education. Admission to the UG courses are done based on the marks secured by the candidates in the entrance examination conducted by the university and candidates with AIEEE score, need not take up the entrance examination conducted by the university. Admission to PG courses is also done based on the entrance examination conducted by the university and candidates with valid GRE/GATE score need not take up the entrance examination for admission to MCA and PG courses in engineering and candidates with valid SAT/MAT and CAT score need not take up admission test for MBA admission.
